Three Hurt In Richmond Helicopter Crash

Updated:

Three people suffered minor injuries when a helicopter crashed in South Richmond Saturday night.

Richmond and State Police responded to the crash around 9:15 p.m. Saturday. The helicopter was attempting to make an emergency landing when it crashed onto Walmsley Boulevard in Richmond.

Authorities say the chopper began experiencing engine problems while it was flying at around 900 feet.  As the chopper was coming down, it hit power lines and then a car, cutting into the car's engine block.

The driver of the car was identified as 54-year-old George Mallory Smith of the 3700 block of Bon Mark Drive in Richmond.

The pilot and owner of the helicopter was identified as 46-year-old Paul Douglas Jackson, of the 4000 block of Traffic Road in Victoria. The passenger was identified as 35-year-old Jamie Long of the 1500 block of Hardy Road in Lunenburg.

All three were taken to VCU Medical Center Saturday night with minor injuries.

Police say that it has been determined that the flight originated at Richmond International Airport and was en route to Lunenburg. The wreckage was transferred to Richmond International Airport where the case remains under investigation.
