RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Virginia's Democratic governor who doubles as Democratic National Committee chairman has rejected a Republican bid to obtain records of his travel.
Virginia Republican Party chairman Pat Mullins requested copies of the governor's internal scheduling and travel records under the state's Freedom of Information Act. Mullins and contends Kaine has spent more time on party politics than state work, and in the process used taxpayer dollars in support of it.
Kaine's communications director, Lynda Tran, wrote in a three-page reply to Mullins the state FOI law exempts a "governor's working papers." She also cited a 1991 state Supreme Court ruling that said then-Gov. L. Douglas Wilder need not turn over telephone records.
