Homeowners' Association Extends Deadline

A Henrico County homeowners' association, under fire for ordering a war hero to remove a flagpole from in front of his home, has extended the deadline for the pole's removal.

The Sussex Square Homeowners' Association sent a letter to Col. Van Barfoot, a Medal of Honor recipient, informing him the flagpole flying the American flag in his front yard must be removed by Friday.

Thursday, the deadline was extended to December 11. If the flagpole has not been removed by that date, the association has said Barfoot could face legal action.

Barfoot, who raises and lowers the flag daily, served and fought in World War II as well as the Vietnam and Korean wars. His fight to keep the flagpole has gained local and national attention.

A Facebook page started to highlight his efforts gathered more than 4,000 fans in the span of about 48 hours.

Sussex Square management has sought out the help of Senator Mark Warner, asking for guidance to come up with a solution that is reasonable to both parties. Sen. Warner released a statement saying "we intend to get to work right away to try to come up with a solution that's acceptable to both Col. Barfoot and to the Homeowner's Association."

Money donations from supporters of the Barfoot family will be going to the USO. If you'd like to make a donation, checks should be made out directly to the USO.
