Firefighters are investigating what caused a demolition business to erupt in flames in Richmond's East End early Thursday morning.
The first calls came in at about 3:30 a.m. for a fire at the intersection of Hatcher Street and Williamsburg Road. Richmond fire crews arrived on scene to find a demolition business fully involved in fire. Several small explosions could also be heard from inside the building.
Fire officials said there were hazardous and flammable materials inside the building. Richmond and Henrico firefighters removed the hazards, and attacked the fire from ladder trucks. At 6:30 a.m., most of the fire had been knocked down.
Richmond Fire Department spokesperson Lt. Shawn L. Jones said several tires were involved in the fire, posing an environmental risk. EPA officials are expected to be on scene later Thursday.
