RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - A pilot is in the hospital after a small plane crashed following takeoff at Richmond International Airport.

Airport spokesman Troy Bell says the twin-engine Piper Navajo crashed around 9:30 p.m. Monday.

Virginia State Police Sgt. Thomas Molnar identified the pilot as 24-year-old Anthony L. Carr of Richmond. Molnar says that Carr is being treated for life-threatening injuries at the Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center burn unit.

Carr was the only person on the plane.

Bell says the plane is owned by Airnet Systems of Columbus, Ohio.

State and federal authorities are investigating the crash.
