State Trooper Killed In King George Crash

RICHMOND – The Virginia State Police are mourning the loss of one of their own. Trooper Adam M. Bowen, 28, of Warsaw, Va., was killed instantly during a two-vehicle traffic crash Friday evening (June 24, 2011) in King George County. 

At approximately 6:45 p.m. Friday (June 24, 2011), Trooper Bowen was responding to a call to assist a state police agent. The trooper was traveling westbound on Route 3/Kings Highway. As the trooper entered the intersection of Route 3 and Madison Drive, his marked Ford Crown Victoria patrol car collided with an eastbound Hyundai Elantra. 

The impact forced the patrol car to run off the road and strike the traffic light pole. The patrol car split in half and the front end continued into a nearby parking lot where it struck three parked cars. Trooper Bowen died on the scene. He was wearing a seat belt. 

The driver and a passenger in the Elantra suffered minor injuries in the crash. They were both transported by ambulance to Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg.

The circumstances surrounding the crash remain under investigation, which is being conducted by the Virginia State Police Accident Reconstruction Team. 

Trooper Bowen is a graduate of the 114th Basic Session. He graduated July 3, 2008, from the Virginia State Police Academy. Since graduation, he has been assigned to the Area 44 Office, which includes King George and Caroline counties. Prior to joining the state police, Trooper Bowen spent five years with the U.S. Air Force National Guard. He served in Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. Trooper Bowen, a native of Warsaw, Va., is survived by a fiancé and his parents.

KING GEORGE, Va. (AP) - Virginia State Police are investigating a traffic crash in King George County that killed a state trooper and injured two others.

Authorities say the trooper was responding to a call for assistance shortly before 7 p.m. Friday when his patrol car collided with another car. The crash happened at the intersection of Route 3 and Madison Drive.

The impact of the crash forced the patrol car to run off the road and strike a traffic pole. The car split in half and the front end hit three cars in a nearby parking lot.

The trooper died on the scene and police are still in the process of notifying next of kin.

Police say the driver and passenger of the other car suffered minor injuries.
