U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings, along with Governor Warner, recognized Richmond's Huguenot High School Thursday. It's all about accountability and Huguenot High School was rewarded for its successes.
"You are getting great results here in Richmond, you're on the move and we like to highlight those who have no excuse for not closing the achievement gap," Spellings told students.
Spellings and Governor Mark Warner were on hand to pat the students on the back. It's taking the No Child Left Behind act to the next level with a new move in high school reform.
Secretary Spellings was appointed to her position by President Bush just six weeks ago and already recognizes Huguenot as a school on the move. She says this school is a model of excellence in urban education. Governor Warner agreed.
"We feel like we are actually ahead of most of the nation in terms of setting high standards and then not retreating from them."
Just five years ago, only five of Richmond city schools were fully accredited. This year the number grew to 29, making Richmond city schools the fastest improving school system in the state. And Huguenot is leading the way. The motto at the school is "Moving from good to great in 2008. And Thursday's visit showed the students that their move out of mediocrity is being recognized.
