A memorial for the Harvey family was held Saturday at the Byrd Theatre in Carytown, which was filled to capacity with 1300 family members, friends, and others from the community who came to say goodbye.
As mourners walked through the lobby, they were greeted by collages of pictures of Bryan and Kathy Harvey and their two daughters, 9-year-old Stella and 4-year-old Ruby. The stage was adorned with flowers and wreaths.
The only family member to speak was Kathy Harvey's brother, actor Steven Culp. He thanked everyone for coming and said his family was overwhelmed by the enormous show of love and affection from the community. He said it made him so proud to be Kathy's brother.
Culp said when life seems unnecessarily cruel and senseless as it does now, some may wonder "what is the point?" The answer, he said, is right here. He said it's to bring love and joy to the people around you, as the Harvey's clearly did for them.
And if they leave with that in their hearts, then they're carrying a part of the Harveys with them.
After his words there was a slide show of family pictures put to music, including the song "Remember us well." There were wedding pictures, goofy pictures of them in crazy costumes, and adorable pictures of the girls, causing some laughter, but mostly tears.
The memorial ended with some live music played by current and former band members of Bryan Harvey and a minister's final thought that the Harveys were a spirited, quirky family full of humor and love. And to remember them well, you must laugh.
