Gay Marriage

Updated:

Seven same sex couples protesting against the General Assembly's latest proposal to ban gay marriage were denied marriage licenses on Tuesday.

Dyana Mason, Executive Director for Equality of Virginia, tells us same sex couples deserve the same rights as heterosexual couples.

"Whether or not these people were able to get a marriage certificate inside, their commitment is just as real as any heterosexual couple who might go inside to get a marriage license."

This is the third year for the protest which has become an annual Valentine's Day tradition.

60 people turned out including many heterosexual supporters. Organizers tell us they hope this is a sign that the amendment won't get enough support to become law.

The gay marriage ban amendment is expected to pass the General Assembly and be on the ballot this November.
