Petersburg Police talk with 8News after one of their own is charged in connection with a fatal wreck. Petersburg Police officer David Christian has been charged with one count of reckless driving.
75-year-old Robert Allen and his 71-year-old wife Juanita were killed in Tuesday night's accident. Investigators tell 8News Officer Christian was going more than 30 miles an hour over the speed limit when he hit the couple's pickup truck. They say he also wasn't using his lights or sirens. According to Petersburg Police, Christian is on paid administrative leave.
"Officer Christian became a police officer to serve and protect and help people so the extent that he was involved in two people dying, understandably he'd be very upset," says Captain Gregory Seidel of the Petersburg Police Department.
Petersburg Police are offering condolences to the family but The Allens are still extremely upset.
According to police Juanita and Robert Allen were pulling out of a gas station on Washington Street when their pick-up truck was hit by the police officer's vehicle. The Allens' son Timothy tells us he wants to see more charges filed against the officer involved.
He tells us he plans to sue the Petersburg Police Department for his parents' deaths.
"Every time I see a police car, I see that accident scene. When I see a police car, it's just like a weapon going down the street because when they're not used properly. It is weapon."
Allen tells us a misdemeanor reckless driving charge is not enough. He hopes authorities will charge Officer Christian with manslaughter and that he will resign from the department.
Police are continuing to investigate the crash and the Allen's family members are preparing to bury the couple. Their funeral will be held on Saturday.
