WHITE STONE, Va. (AP) - A truck ban on a two-mile span across the Rappahannock River is taking a toll on commerce on the Northern Neck.
With the ban on the Norris Bridge, construction workers and truck drivers are facing an 85-mile detour in some cases.
To make a delivery in Gloucester on Thursday, one trucker had to travel up to Warsaw and cross the Rappahannock River at Tappahannock and then drive down U.S. 17. The usual 15-minute trip took two hours.
The Virginia Department of Transportation banned all trucks from the bridge Wednesday and posted a 3-ton weight limit on the 50-year-old span.
The restriction is expected to last 30 days until a pin connecting one of the trusses is replaced.
