Public Speaks On Smoking Ban

Updated:

A public hearing Monday night about a proposed state-wide smoking ban drew sopporters from both sides of the issue.

A Senate subcommittee heard public opinion on Governor Tim Kaine's proposed ban, which would prohibit smoking inside state bars and restaurants. The majority of those voicing their concerns said it was time to stamp out smoking.

Doctors, restaurant workers and other advocates all came out to speak up in support of the bill, which failed to pass last year. One restaurant worker said customer smoking had started to affect her health.

"I've suffered a of health problems due to working at a restaurant," said local waitress Megan Rash. "I've had walking pneumonia twice and I've had constant bronchial infections."

Local doctors say the bill is necessary for workplace safety.

"Patrons can avoid going to a restaurant that allows smoking but your bar and restaurant workers have no choice," said Dr. William Hark, a local allergist.

Despite overwhelming support last night, not everyone is in favor of the bill. One local restaurant owner spoke out against the ban.

"I think it is an interference in free-enterprise and the system that we have right now," said owner Christopher Savvides. "I think the system is actually working."

The Senate is expected to vote on the bill next week.
