Volunteers Remove 20 Tons Of Trash From Creek

Updated:

More than 200 volunteers removed over 20 tons of trash in a massive greenway clean-up Saturday.

The project took place at Cannon Creek along the Richmond-Henrico Turnpike from Valley Road to Dove Street.

The area has become known as a trash heap and people from all over Virginia gathered to help clean it up.

"We've estimated that there's been a lot of debris dumped in the area for about a period of 20 years or so," said volunteer recruiter Chris French.

People of all ages removed appliances, dishwashers, car parts, and over 400 tires from the cluttered creek.

"The real treasure is the volunteers that have come out and the community that are willing to come out and clean this place up," said Sixth District City Councilperson Ellen Robertson.

The city hopes to eventually build a walkway and bike path next to the creek as it works toward revitalizing and beautifying Richmond.

"We've got an opportunity to link this to other bike trails and form a network in the Richmond area," said Richmond Bike Association President Champe Burnley.

Saturday's project was so successful that organizers plan more clean-ups in the spring and fall.
