RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Virginia Attorney General Bob McDonnell is resigning this month to focus on his gubernatorial campaign.

McDonnell sent an e-mail to employees in his office shortly before 8 a.m. Tuesday announcing his plans to leave his post on Feb. 20. A press conference is planned for later Tuesday.

In the e-mail, McDonnell thanked employees for their service during his more than three years in office. He also said he is confident Deputy Attorney General Bill Mims will be appointed to serve the remainder of McDonnell's term.

The 54-year-old is running unopposed for the Republican nomination for governor. He faces the winner of June's three-way Democratic primary between Brian Moran, Creigh Deeds and Terry McAuliffe.
