Belle Isle Bridge To Remain Closed

Updated:

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Public access to Belle Isle will remain closed for several weeks while scaffolding is erected to protect a pedestrian bridge from falling debris.

The suspension bridge has been closed since a 3-foot piece of concrete fell from the Robert E. Lee Bridge and landed on it Saturday afternoon. No one was injured.

Richmond public works officials said Thursday they also are seeking expedited approval of bids to repair an emergency access bridge to the James River island. That bridge was closed in January after faulty welds were discovered.

Repairs to the access bridge could take several months.

Department of Public Works Director Dexter White said the Robert  E. Lee Bridge is safe for vehicle traffic.
