
A Hanover County student has been diagnosed with the meningococcal infection that causes meningitis, according to school and health officials.
Officials are now looking for Atlee High School students that may have had contact with the infected student.
"As part of our commitment to serve and protect the community, we felt the need to inform and treat certain individuals as a precautionary step to safeguard their health, said Kay Rankin with the Chickahominy Health District.
"As with any health issue we are involved with, we want to encourage people to call us if they have any questions or concerns"
Bacterial meningitis is a disease that causes inflammation of tissues surrounding the brain, and can be fatal. Symptoms include fever, chills, headache, muscle aches and a stiff neck. Other symptoms include nausea, vomiting, sleepiness, confusion and a possible skin rash.
