Colonial Heights Cleaning Up After Tornado

Updated:

Parts of central and southeast Virginia are picking up after three tornadoes caused major damage across the Commonwealth Monday. They touched down Monday afternoon in Colonial Heights and Brunswick, with the most extensive damage in Suffolk.

According to witnesses, damage is widespread in the Southpark Mall area of Colonial Heights.

Officials confirm at least 18 people were injured near the mall. Witnesses report cars being tossed around, and debris strewn everywhere.

Officials said three victims were taken to Southside Regional Medical Center, and three victims were transported to VCU Medical Center. Some of the injuries are considered serious, but not life-threatening.

Target, Wal-Mart, Best Buy, Dress barn and Old Navy stores in the Southpark area all suffered substantial damage.

VDOT officials said all debris has been removed from Interstate 95, but traffic remained backed up for about two miles in each direction from the Southpark Mall area.

In Brunswick County, witnesses are reporting severe damage to trees and some structures near Lawrenceville.

The Red Cross has openied a service center at the Brunswick County Airport for anyone who needs help.  They will assist those with lodging, food, clothing, medication and other emergency needs.  For those that are not able to come to the service center, call the Red Cross 24-hour number at 804-733-5711.
