STAFFORD, Va. (AP) - The National Park Service is recognizing a Stafford County site for the role it played in the Underground Railroad.
The park service has added Aquia Landing to the National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom.
In the mid-19th century Aquia Landing was a transportation and shipping hub on the Potomac River that linked Fredericksburg and Richmond to Washington. Slaves heading north to freedom passed through the site.
