VERONA, Va. (AP) - McQuay International is laying off 48 hourly production workers at its plant in Verona.
McQuay says the layoffs will be effective Monday. The company attributed the layoffs to a drop in demand for its products because of economic and market conditions.
McQuay manufactures heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems for the commercial buildings industry.
McQuay spokeswoman Paula Greenhagen said the Verona plant will employ 440 people after the reduction.
The United Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers of America Local 123 represents 244 workers at the plant. Local 123's national representative, George Waksmunski, says union workers are disappointed with the layoffs but he's optimistic that the company's business will improve.
