Jury Awards $8 Million To Woman Struck By GRTC Bus

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - A Richmond jury has awarded $8 million to a woman who suffered severe injuries when she was struck by a bus while walking to work.

The seven-member jury deliberated an hour Wednesday before awarding Meikiu Lo the full amount that she sought, according to her lawyer, Jason Konvicka. The research librarian at the Library of Virginia suffered spine and shoulder damage and multiple fractures of her pelvis after a bus struck her as she crossed a downtown street two years ago.

Konvicka said the 34-year-old woman suffers from chronic pain and likely will undergo major hip-replacement surgeries before she turns 50.

John M. Lewis, GRTC Transit System's chief executive officer, declined to comment. Efforts to reach attorneys for the bus company were unsuccessful.
