BEDFORD, Va. (AP) - An 88-year-old Virginia veteran who flew more than 100 fighter missions during World War II is being honored by France for his military service.
The National D-Day Memorial says Bill Overstreet will be honored Tuesday as a chevalier of the Legion of Honor by French ambassador Pierre Vimont. The ceremony will be held at the memorial in Bedford.
Napoleon Bonaparte created the legion in 1802. It recognizes military, cultural, scientific or social contributions to France, including by people who are not French citizens.
Memorial officials says Vimont met Overstreet in January during a visit to the area and offered to travel to Bedford to present the award.
