Albemarle Allowing Private Wind Turbines

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) - Albemarle County's supervisors have agreed to allow residents in rural areas to erect small wind turbines.

The zoning change unanimously approved Thursday allows turbines up to 35 feet tall and restricts their location to at least 150 feet away from any property lines or roads. The change only applies to rural areas of the county.

But county officials don't expect residents will rush to embrace the technology. They say Albemarle County doesn't have as much wind as other locations, and it could take years for owners to recover the purchase cost from energy savings.
