Program Overview
Communities across the country have united to support the St. Jude Dream Home® Giveaway benefiting St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, one of the world’s leading pediatric cancer research centers. The giveaway allows people to reserve tickets for $100 each to qualify to win a new home valued between $200,000 and $420,000 in cities where the St. Jude Dream Home Giveaway is being held. At the end of the 12-week campaign, the winner of the St. Jude Dream Home is drawn during a live television special, along with many other great prizes.

Dream Home is:

  • A proven success: Dream Homes have raised over $30 million for St. Jude in the past twelve years.
  • Community-based: Prize sponsors, ticket volunteers, banks, television and radio stations, and newspapers come together to bring this even to the forefront. This is a community event that allows everyone to participate.
  • Nationwide: 23 Dream Homes were given away in St. Jude's 2004 fiscal year, with 35 scheduled for the next fiscal year. Dream Home markets include Chicago, Dallas, Cincinnati and Baton Rouge. Greater Hampton Roads has hosted a Dream Home for five years, with the next giveaway taking place on April 17, 2005.
  • In Richmond: On August 7, 2005, we will give away the first Dream Home in Richmond. Prospect Homes will build the Dream Home in the new community of Greenbriar Woods in Chester. This home is valued at over $300,000. WRIC is the television sponsor and will host the giveaway special. St. Jude's goal is to sell 7,500 tickets and 1 in 500 ticket buyers will win a prize, either the Dream Home or one of 14 other prizes valued at a minimum of $1,000.

Why St. Jude?
Since 1962, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital has broadened research boundaries by developing new kinds of treatment and sharing research discoveries with the medical community worldwide. St. Jude is the first institution established for the sole purpose of conducting basic and clinical research into catastrophic childhood diseases, mainly cancer. It is the largest childhood cancer research center in the world in terms of the number of patients enrolled and successfully treated. Since opening, St. Jude has developed protocols that have brought survival rates for childhood cancers from less than 20 percent to better than 70 percent overall.

St. Jude founder Danny Thomas believed that no child should ever be turned away because of his or her family's inability to pay for treatment. Thanks to fundraising through programs such as Dream Home, this tenet is still present at St. Jude, and no family is ever sent a bill for medical treatment beyond what is covered by medical insurance. Families without insurance are never asked to pay.
