RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - A conference designed to prepare Hispanic youths for college is starting in Richmond.
The first Richmond Hispanic Youth Symposium is taking place from July 16-19, at the University of Richmond.
It will feature competitions for $2,000, $1,000, and $500 scholarships in art, speech, talent and essay categories.
Organizers with the Hispanic College Fund say the event offers a chance for Hispanic youths to develop a network of peers and mentors, learn about resources and tools for college, and develop a long-term career vision.
The event is expected to draw more than 100 local Hispanic high schoolers.
Later, organizers say students will continue to participate in local business functions and college and career fairs.
Another symposium - the first for northern Virginia - is planned Aug. 6, at George Mason University.
