Aunt and uncle charged in death of Colonial Heights toddler

WRIC Newsroom - COLONIAL HEIGHTS, Va. (WRIC) -- A couple has been charged in the death of their 14-month-old nephew who was found dead inside a Colonial Heights home last January.

After a nearly year-long investigation, 37-year-old Damarcus and 39-year-old Winter Harvey were both indicted Tuesday, January 9. They were taken into custody Friday and charged with one count each of child neglect.

Their nephew, King Edward Harvey, was found unresponsive inside their home in the 100 block of Moore Avenue last January 24. Medical personnel on scene determined the toddler was deceased.

In July, police said they were still considering the case a death investigation, but a medical examiner told 8News that King Harvey's death appeared to have been a homicide due to blunt force trauma to the head.

On Friday, police said the child's aunt and uncle were caring for him at the time, and didn't seek proper medical attention when the child was injured.

"When you're dealing with a child, especially a child that can't protect themselves, 14 months old, it's really of particular interest to these detectives and investigators to get the truth and provide justice for this family," Captain William Anspach with the Colonial Heights Police Department said.

Damarcus Harvey remains jailed on a $2,500 bond. His wife, Winter Harvey, was released on an unsecured bond. Both are due in court on Tuesday.
