Local furniture company to create jobs, revenue in Scott's Addition Neighborhood

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- A local furniture company has purchased an old building in Scott's Addition that could bring more jobs to the city.

With the City of Richmond actively trying to generate revenue, a vacant building does just the opposite. However, this empty building in Scott's Addition will soon create taxes for Richmond as well as create jobs.

It is an eyesore right in the middle of Richmond's Scott's Addition neighborhood. Weeds are overgrown and graffiti covers its walls, but this vacant building has a new owner now.

A company that's already in Scott's Addition on Summit Avenue called McKinnon and Harris bought the land for $1.7 million. The outdoor furniture company has been shopping around for three years trying to figure out where to expand and the company returned to a familiar community just a few blocks away in Scott's Addition on Arlington Road.

That's good news for the city.

"Now they'll be making about a $9 million investment on that property," said Richmond Deputy Director of Economic and Community Development Jane Ferrar. "The property will go back on the tax roll for the city. Along with their growth plan, they'll be hiring new employees that will be working out of that facility and this will be their international showroom and headquarters."

Right next door to the future home of McKinnon and Harris is a metal franchise company. Rob Racine just bought it less than a year ago. He says having a new neighbor is good for Scott's Addition and especially good for him.

"We specialize in cutting metal to size so any manufacturing company that comes in a potential partner of ours and customer of ours so we're very excited," Racine said.

City leaders and business owners feel the best is yet to come for Scott's Addition because this community is a prominent gateway into Richmond.

"I serve from Petersburg to Ashland, from Charlottesville to Williamsburg, we serve a broad area. Being right off of 64 here, this is a fantastic location for a lot of businesses," Racine said.

The company will initially add around 40 new employees and eventually that number will double.
