Woman shot after trying to run over officers charged with attempted capital murder

CHESTER, Va. (WRIC) -- A woman has been charged with the attempted capital murder of a police officer on Friday after attempting to run officers over at a hotel in Chesterfield. 

At around 11 p.m. Thursday, officers were doing a routine patrol for drugs and prostitution in the area around the Suburban Extended Stay Hotel on W. Hundred Road.

Officers saw a woman standing in front of the hotel, approached her, and started talking to her. Police say that's when the woman got in her car and tried to run the officers over. The officers fired at her, and she was hit in the hand and arm.

During the incident, the woman also struck a parked vehicle in the lot behind the hotel.

Officers say they eventually removed the woman from the vehicle and rendered first aid on the scene. Neither of the officers were hurt.

The woman shot, identified as Emily C. Adkins, 28, was taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries. 

Police searched the room that Adkins and a man, identified as Derrick L. Bynum, 46, were sharing.

Authorities discovered a firearm and what appeared to be a controlled substance in the room.

  •   attempted capital murder of a police officer;
  • * possession of a firearm by a convicted felon;
  • * possession of a schedule I, II controlled substance;
  • * possession with intent to distribute a schedule I, II controlled substance;
  • * possession of a firearm while in possession of a schedule I, II controlled substance.

Adkins remains in the hospital in the custody of the Chesterfield County Sheriff’s Office.

Bynum was also arrested and charged with the following:

  • possession of a schedule I, II controlled substance;
  • * distribution of a schedule I, II controlled substance;
  • * conspiracy to distribute a schedule I, II controlled substance;
  • * possession with intent to distribute a schedule I, II controlled substance;
  • * possession with intent to distribute a schedule I, II controlled substance – conspiracy;
  • * possession of a firearm by a convicted felon;
  • * possession of a firearm while in possession of a schedule I, II controlled substance;
  • * and maintaining a common nuisance.

Bynum is being held without bond at the Chesterfield County Jail.
