One dead after two-vehicle crash in Caroline County

CAROLINE COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) - One person is dead following a two-vehicle crash in Caroline County, according to Virginia State Police.

Officers were called to the 32000 block of Richmond Turnpike about 10:30 a.m. Sunday. 

State police tell us that Gregory Scott Layne, 56, of Mechanicville was driving a 2005 Toyota Corolla southbound on Route 301 when he crossed the center line into the northbound traffic. He hit a 2007 Nissan XTerra with seven people inside. 

Layne died from his injuries at the scene. He had a infant passenger in the vehicle that did not have visual signs of injuries, but was transported to the hospital for further observation.

All seven people in the Nissan were taken to the hospital for treatment of their injuries. Their injuries range from minor to serious, but not life-threatening.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Stay with 8News for updates.
