Man dies after falling into Charlottesville creek

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WRIC) -- Authorities say a man has died after he fell into a creek in Charlottesville on Sunday.

Newsplex reports that just before 5 p.m., rescue crews initially found a wheelchair leaning over a small cliff by a creek on Cedars Court.

A water rescue was launched, and firefighters located the man a short way downstream.

Charlottesville Fire Chief Andrew Baxter told Newsplex the man was located in cardiac arrest, and was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

It's unclear how the man -- who was a resident of the Cedar Healthcare Center nearby -- ended up at the scene. The incident remains under investigation.

This happened shortly after a severe thunderstorm rolled through the area. Those same storms hit Central Virginia hard, too, and even led to a rescue over the weekend.

The James River is still above life jacket stage due to the high waters.
