Officials: 2 dead, firefighter transported to hospital after house fire in Portsmouth

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WRIC) -- Two people are dead and a firefighter is injured after an early morning house fire in Portsmouth. 

Dispatch received the report of the fire around 4:15 a.m. at a house on Atlanta Avenue, which is just off of Elm Avenue. 

Officials with the Portsmouth Fire Marshal’s Office told WAVY-TV 10 emergency responders learned on the way to the scene that two people inside the house could not get out.

When crews arrived, there was heavy fire extending from the front porch area of the house. 

One of the victims was found on the first floor and the other victim was found on the second floor. The male and female victims were taken to Bon Secours Maryview Medical Center where they were pronounced dead. 

Officials say a firefighter was also transported to the hospital, but is in stable condition. 

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
