Flying Squirrels home opener sells out for 9th straight season

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- The home opener for the Flying Squirrels has sold out for the ninth straight season.

This season, like all the others, is about the fans having a good time.

Events such as Bark in the Park Monday, Tip of the Cap Tuesday, Wine Up Wednesday, Free Shirt Friday and Super Blast Fireworks Saturday, demonstrate The Diamond's commitment to the fan experience.

Tonight, they've got something extra special for fans -- a firework show and an appearance from five-time Major League All-Star Fred McGriff.

8News Reporter Nick Conigliaro spoke with VP and COO Todd "Parney" Parnell who said this night isn't like any other, and having an opening day sell-out crowd for nine straight seasons is unheard of for even some major league teams, let alone one of the minors.

But the fans make all this possible, which is why it's not just them cheering for their local team, but one large community.

The Squirrels are hoping to repeat last season's opening day success in front of that sell-out crowd, and snag a victory. This time they’re up against the Reading Fightin Phils.

The first pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
