Fair Debt Collections Practices Act

Collection agencies are now calling people at their place of employment to collect debts. The constant personal phone calls to a place of business can create an uncomfortable situation for an employee. There are ways to avoid being harassed at work.

Collection agencies may call you at work unless you specifically tell them to stop. It's advisable to let them know over the phone and in writing. At that point they have to cease contact.

There is one stipulation though, the rule only applies to collection agencies. The fair debt collection practices act does not apply to the original creditor, it only applies to collectors.

The best way to handle the situation is to be proactive. Let collectors know up front that them calling could cause you to lose your job and if you don't have a job, you don't have income and you can't pay that debt back.
