DMV Employee Killed During Road Skills Test Crash

Release from the Williamsburg Police Department:

Williamsburg Police are investigating a single vehicle fatality accident that occurred shortly before noon on July 14, 2011 in the 200 block of Penniman Rd. The vehicle drove south on Parkway Dr. when it crossed over Penniman Rd. and left the roadway. The accident occurred in the field near this intersection, the vehicle struck a tree and overturned. The vehicle driver was transported by medics to Williamsburg Sentara Hospital. The passenger was airlifted from the scene and transported to MCV.

The passenger of the vehicle, 56 year old Shirley Martin, was pronounced dead by MCV around 0130 AM on July 15, 2011. Ms. Martin is an employee of DMV and was working in her official capacity at the time of the accident. The name of the driver is being withheld at this time. The cause of the accident is still under investigation.

"The DMV family is in mourning over the sudden tragic loss of one of our own. Our hearts are with our co-worker's loved ones. We await details of the incident being investigated by law enforcement. Meantime, for the safety of all, we urge everyone to take extra care every time they get behind the wheel."
