Release from the Virginia Department of General Services:
Richmond, VA – On Friday, January 6, 2012 at around 6:30 a.m. a state mail van was stolen from the state mail facility that is operated by the Commonwealth of Virginia, Department of General Services (DGS). The van was parked in the parking lot within the barb wire fenced area of the mail facility with one batch of mail that was scheduled to be delivered to the
Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation (DPOR) and the Virginia Department of Health Professions (DHP).
Only two agencies had mail affected by the theft of the van. The mail inside the van had been picked up from the U.S. Post Office in the late afternoon of Thursday, January 5. The Department of General Services wants individuals who may have recently mailed an item to either DPOR or DHP to be aware of this situation. Next week, information will be posted on the DPOR (www.dpor.virginia.gov) and DHP (www.dhp.virginia.gov) web sites as updates become available. To contact the Department of General Services, call 804-786-3313.
"This is an unfortunate incident that has occurred and an investigation is underway," Richard F. Sliwoski, Director of the Department of General Services. "We have contacted the U.S. Postal Inspection Service and we are working closely with the State Police and the two agencies affected to ensure proper steps are taken to find the vehicle and recover the mail."
State police are searching for a 2002 GMC Safari. The minivan is light brown and has blue State of Virginia license plates that read 24274S. Anyone with information about this vehicle is asked to please call state police at (804) 553-3445 or toll-free at 1-800-552-9965.
State Mail Services began in 2006 as an effort to consolidate mail services at Capitol Square. The consolidation of mail services has provided agencies with savings by reducing postage costs and eliminating redundant services and equipment. Currently, over 40 agencies utilize the services offered by the DGS State Mail Services.
