PETERSBURG, Va. (AP) - A prosecutor says a 7-year-old boy may have started a fire in Petersburg that killed his 2-year-old sister.
Petersburg Commonwealth's Attorney Cassandra Conover tells The Progress-Index that investigators are looking into the role the boy may have played in Monday's fire.
Authorities haven't determined the cause of the fire. But the children's parents, Cecil Yates and Wendy Petree, told WRIC-TV that their son set a blanket on fire. They say he has behavioral health problems and they tried without success to have him placed in a residential mental facility.
The state Medical Examiner's Office says the girl, Le'Shay F. Yates, died as a result of "thermal and inhalational injuries."
The parents and the boy escaped the fire.
