Federal Court Dismisses Redistricting Challenge

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - A federal court has dismissed a Democratic-backed lawsuit challenging Virginia's Republican-drawn congressional redistricting plan.

Without comment, U.S. District Judge Anthony Trenga in Alexandria granted Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli's motion to dismiss the case.

Six Virginia residents alleged in the complaint that Virginia's GOP-ruled General Assembly forfeited its right to redraw the state's 11 U.S. House districts after 2011. The Virginia Constitution requires that the legislature conduct reapportionment in 2011 and every 10 years thereafter.

The plaintiffs asked the judge to rule that the new lines, rushed through the legislature last month, are void and for the court to redraw the districts. A companion lawsuit, filed in Richmond Circuit Court, has not yet been resolved.
