Living Wage Campaign: UVA Students On Hunger Strike

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) - Twelve University of Virginia students say they've embarked on a hunger strike to draw attention to their efforts to get school officials to improve employee compensation, including raising the minimum wage to $13 an hour.

The students said at a weekend rally that members of the Living Wage Campaign plan to hold daily events to draw attention to their cause.

The Daily Progress reports that school officials responded with a statement expressing concern for students' health and warning them about the consequences of violating U.Va. regulations in their use of university space.

In addition to raising U.Va. workers' minimum hourly pay to $13from $10.65, the group seeks automatic annual cost-of-living adjustments and creation of an oversight board that allows workers to voice grievances without fear of retaliation.
