COLONIAL HEIGHTS – Today's sunshine and warmer temperatures have aided the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) in clearing roads for the majority of the Richmond area. However, VDOT warns drivers to use caution overnight and early Tuesday when temperatures are expected to dip below freezing; any moisture on roads could re-freeze and create slick spots, particularly on bridges, overpasses, ramps and in shaded locations.
Crews will continue to apply sand and salt to icy areas overnight. Salt helps to melt snow and ice, and sand provides traction. VDOT reminds drivers that, even when roads have been treated, drivers should reduce their speed and leave a safe distance of at least five seconds behind other vehicles and trucks that are applying salt and abrasives to the road.
