Petersburg City Manager To Keep Job For Now

Petersburg City Council decided Friday morning that it was in the best interest of the city for City Manager William Johnson to remain in his post despite abuse allegations.

Johnson is accused of punching his wife, and faces an assault and battery charge.

Council made the decision in a closed-door meeting early Friday morning. Council members said afterward they would re-evaluate Johnson's status at the conclusion of his court case.

Petersburg city manager William Johnson III is facing charges of assault after a domestic incident.

Johnson is charged with assault after the incident Saturday, and is due in court Wednesday. Petersburg Police would not release any details about the incident.

Petersburg city officials released the following statement:

"Petersburg City Council is aware of the situation facing City Manager William Johnson, but Council has not met to discuss the issue. Until such time as City Council does meet, Mr. Johnson will continue to work as City Manager of Petersburg. The matter has been referred to Petersburg's Acting City Attorney, William Hefty."
