UPDATE: VA Hospital Shooting Victim Dies; Suspect Was Neighbor

UPDATE: James Stephenson Lee, the man shot outside McGuire VA Medical Center on Wednesday, has died, according to a spokesperson at VCU Medical Center.

Court documents show Lee was shot in the head and the left eye. He was unresponsive at the scene, according to the documents.

The alleged gunman, Cornelius Hayes, is in custody, facing a weapons charge.

The court affidavit shows Hayes has two prior felony convictions from 2001: assault and battery of a law enforcement officer, and shooting at an occupied building. 

The affidavit and online records indicate that Hayes and Lee were neighbors, living one block apart on the same street in Blackstone.

Hayes is due in U.S. District Court in Richmond on Friday afternoon.


UPDATE: The U.S. Attorney's office announced late Wednesday afternoon that the man taken into custody after a shooting at the McGuire VA Medical Center has been formally charged with a firearm violation.

Cornelius I. Hayes, 55, of Blackstone, Va., is charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm. Officers said they recovered a revolver from Hayes' vehicle after he led police on a chase shortly after the Wednesday morning shooting.

Officials said Hayes' charge includes firing the weapon in the VA hospital parking lot. Additional charges are possible.

The victim has not been identified. The victim remains in critical condition.


UPDATE: A suspect has been taken into custody after another man was shot and critically wounded at the McGuire Veteran's Hospital Wednesday morning.

State Police units apprehended the suspect in Chesterfield County after a police pursuit through several jurisdictions. The suspect's identity has not yet been released. He is currently in the custody of the FBI.

Police have not released the victim's identity or any possible relationship between the victim and the suspect.

Richmond Police and other agencies are looking for a suspect after a man was shot outside of the McGuire VA Medical Center Wednesday morning. 

According to police, a male victim was shot. His injuries are considered life-threatening.

Initial reports from police that the victim was a woman were incorrect.

No suspect information has been released. No one is custody.

A hospital spokesperson said the shooting occurred in parking lot 6C. The spokesperson stressed that the hospital is open as normal other than the one parking area, and that there is no additional threat to the main hospital building or the rest of the campus.

Hospital staff could not confirm if the victim was a patient, employee or visitor.

The hospital is located at 1201 Broad Rock Boulevard in South Richmond.
