VDOT is proposing a $1 monthly use fee for EZ Pass transponders.
The agency alerted the Commonwealth Transportation Board about the plan Wednesday.
VDOT officials say the fee will help cover the costs of new toll facilities that will be coming on line statewide this year.
The fee would pay for the cost of administering and processing toll transactions, an operation that's currently paid for with toll revenue.
If approved, it would mean drivers would pay a $1 monthly user fee for each transponder they have.
The fee would go into effect July 1st.
