PETERSBURG, Va. (AP) - Two suburban Richmond men who served their nation decades ago are receiving Bronze Star medals.
World War II veteran James W. Hare and Vietnam veteran Michael A. Willis will be honored Thursday at Fort Lee in Petersburg. The ceremony also comes on the 237th birthday of the Army.
According to Fort Lee officials, the 86-year-old Hare became eligible for the Bronze Star in 1947 after he was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge. Like many others after the war, he had already left active military service.
As for the 64-year-old Willis, he was intended to receive the Bronze Star in connection with military operations against hostile forces between May 1967 and April 1968, but it was never recorded in his official records.
Both men are from Midlothian.
