RICHMOND, VA. (AP) - Three Virginia law enforcement agencies are receiving federal grants totaling more than $1 million to hire recent military veterans as police officers and sheriff's deputies.
The funding from the U.S. Department of Justice's Office of Community Oriented Policing was announced Monday.
The awards are intended to create or save about 800 law enforcement positions in more than 220 cities and counties around the country. All of the new positions must be filled by veterans who served at least 180 days since the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.
The Washington Post reports that the Chesapeake Police Department received $536,119 to fund five officers, the Hopewell Bureau of Police received $248,382 for two officers, and the Page County Sheriff's Department got $330,891 for three deputies.
