HAMPTON, VA. (AP) - An awards ceremony at Fort Eustis will honor the U.S. Army's active duty and reserve drill sergeant of the year.

The winners will be selected from a field of six finalists. They have undergone a four-day competition at the Hampton base that tests their knowledge of Army training and their ability to teach new soldiers.

The active duty drill sergeant of the year receives the Stephen Ailes Award, named for the secretary of the Army from 1964 to 1965. The reserve winner receives the Ralph Hines Jr. Award, named for the former commander of Continental Army Command, now known as U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command.

The finalists are among 2,000 drill sergeants who train 160,000 new soldiers each year.
