RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - A state environmental official says the health risk of a sewage spill into the James River is probably low.
State officials say 2.6 million gallons of partially treated sewage spilled from Lynchburg's sewage treatment plant on Saturday after it lost power.
Rebecca LePrell with the Department of Environmental Quality said there's a risk from swimming in any water body that's not treated. She told The Richmond Times-Dispatch that people generally should not swim in streams after a sewage release for about three days.
