SMITHFIELD, Va. (AP) - Pork producer Smithfield Foods Inc. is opening a restaurant showcasing its products in its namesake headquarters town.
The Smithfield, Va.-based company said it plans to open the Taste of Smithfield restaurant on Tuesday. It will feature items like salads and sandwiches using Smithfield pork products as well as ribs and burgers.
The new restaurant shares a new two-story, 8,700-square-foot building with the company's retail store, the Genuine Smithfield Ham Shoppe.
CEO C. Larry Pope says he's excited about the new restaurant, hoping it will attract more visitors to the historic town and give the company a place to showcase its products.
The new joint venture will be overseen by the Smithfield Specialty Foods Group.
Smithfield Foods sells brands include Armour, Farmland and its namesake.
