RICHMOND, VA. (AP) - The Appalachian Regional Commission says a $100 billion transportation bill signed by President Barack Obama provides a significant federal commitment to complete a highway system in the Appalachia region.
The Appalachian Regional Commission has promoted a road-building initiative for years to open up remote mountain regions of the 13 Appalachian states to commerce by improving the transportation.
According to the commission, the transportation bill will free up $2.1 billion in federal dollars for the Appalachian Development Highway System without requiring state matching funds.
The commission said the funding should allow states to move forward on critical corridors of the Appalachian highway system.
