Ashland, VA—An elderly female driver suffered minor injuries after a slow-moving train hit her car Tuesday afternoon in Hanover County.
The woman drove onto the tracks around the lowered railroad crossing gates. Apparently, she did not see the train coming.
The Amtrak train hit her car at a speed of about 15 miles per hour. The driver sustained minor injuries, and was transported to an area hospital for treatment.
Amtrak officials say the train, dubbed Train 76-The Carolinian, was traveling from New York. It was not damaged, and continued on course to its destination of Charlotte, North Carolina at 1:40 PM, after a delay of an hour and fifteen minutes. The driver's car was towed away from the scene.
Police believe the woman was confused by construction underway at the railroad crossing. No charges have been filed in this incident.
