Richmond Man Shoots Himself, Other Man In Drug Transaction

Posted: Updated:

Spotsylvania, VA—A Richmond man has been charged with malicious wounding, after shooting another man in the leg the evening of July 11, and injuring himself in the process.

Police say 25-year-old Travis Burley and another person met 29-year-old Matthew Johnson in the parking lot of Cancun Margarita Bar & Grill located in the 3100 block of Plank Road shortly before 8:00 PM.

It appears the three met for an illegal drug transaction; the incident was sparked by an argument between Burley (of Richmond) and Johnson (of Spotsylvania), after Burley entered John's vehicle to complete the transaction.

During the argument, Burley brandished a semi-automatic handgun, and he and Johnson struggled over the weapon. Burley then shot Johnson in the left hand and in the left calf. Burley also accidentally shot himself in the left hand.

Burley then exited Johnson's vehicle, got into his own car and drove about 100 yards. He then parked the vehicle, got out and sat on the sidewalk, where he called 911. The person who was with Burley fled the scene on foot.

Johnson drove himself to a nearby hotel and called 911.

Both Burley and Johnson were apprehended when law enforcement officials arrived, and then transported to Mary Washington Hospital for treatment of their injuries. They were both released into police custody a short time later.

Police recovered a semi-automatic handgun from Burley's vehicle; he was charged with malicious wounding and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and is being held on no bond.

A large amount of marijuana was recovered from Johnson's vehicle; he was charged with possession with the intent to distribute and is being held on no bond.
