Chesterfield, VA—Fire department crews were called to the scene of a small fire at the Atlantic At Charter Colony Retirement Community in Midlothian Thursday afternoon.

113 apartment units were evacuated in the age 55+ community located at 5500 Coalfield Road, as crews worked to totally extinguish the fire, which began in an apartment on the third floor.

Officials say that the fire activated the building's sprinkler system, and put out most of the flames.

1 person was injured, and transported to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

12 apartment units sustained water and smoke damage in the fire; the rest of the building is habitable with no damage. The displaced individuals are being housed in a local hotel until the units are habitable again. After crews ensured that the building was safe, residents were allowed to return to the building just after 7 PM.

The cause of the fire is believed to be improperly discarded smoking materials, which caught fire in a trash can.
